Nick Austin SJ

Nick Austin,  , is from Warwickshire.  He joined the Jesuits in 1996, having previously studied Philosophy at Bristol and Edinburgh Universities, and taught Religion and Philosophy at a Secondary School for two years.

After novitiate in Birmingham, Nick studied Sociology at the London School of Economics before spending two years' Regency teaching in the Marian Academy in Georgetown, Guyana.  Nick comments: 'The two years in Guyana were an important and rich time for me.  I felt part of the Society's mission, part of something bigger.  It wasn't just something I'd chosen to do myself, but something I was given to do.'

He spent three years studying Theology at Heythrop College, University of London, and living in the Jesuit community in Brixton, before moving to Boston College in the United States, to pursue a doctorate in ethics.  He was ordained to the priesthood in July 2006.

Nick adds, 'For me the challenge is to express the faith in a way which connects with ordinary people, which speaks to their experience of life.  For that, Theology can't be just an academic discipline.  We need to find new ways to communicate the Good News to today's culture.'
