Spiritual life

Jesuit formation begins with a two year period called the Novitiate, during which the emphasis is on deepening each man's life in relationship to God.

Extended opportunities for prayer each day, the making of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius over a month's retreat, reflection on experiences of apostolic work, the sharing of faith with others, all in the context of community celebrations of the sacraments and the guidance of the novice director: such a life deepens our awareness of the ways God is at work in our lives.

The prayer of the Exercises, participation in the Eucharist, and faith-sharing in community are just some of the ways in which this process of growth continues through formation.

After the years of study and ministry, the Jesuit is given another period of time - six months to a year - for a further deepening of his relationship with God: the 'Tertianship.'
