Colnbrook detention centre

Harry Elias SJ

I work in a team, in close collaboration with the Pentecostal minister, but also with the Muslim imam and the Sikh chaplain.  Every now and then, we have informal, but stimulating conversations.  Whenever there is a new intake, we are invited to accompany the trainee officers in visiting different places of worship.  On those days the Sikh Gurdwara provides us with a midday vegetarian meal.  Keeping good communication with the officers is important.

Most of the time I go round visiting those whom I know are Catholic, and others who approach me and simply want someone to talk to and maybe offer a little help, whether they be Christian or Muslim or whatever.  I stock the place with bibles, and give rosaries and crosses to those who ask for them.  I depend very much for information on asylum issues on JRS.  Once a week I am at their office in London Bridge.
