Portadown, Co. Armagh

Michael Bingham SJ

As regards the second, in Portadown itself I belong to a group of clergy and church workers, trying to witness to unity in difference in a town that has been riven by bitter division.  The churches in the North, unwittingly, contribute as much to the maintaining of sectarianism as other institutions.

On a wider scale, I am a member of Mediation Northern Ireland, an organisation that offers a service of intervention in disputes of all kinds, and of training to groups and bodies in dealing with conflict.  This work takes me into many different settings throughout the North and brings me into contact with people of diverse backgrounds.
