Paul Nicholson SJ
Shortly before I joined the Jesuits in 1978, GC 32 declared "the mission of the Society of Jesus today is the service of faith, of which the promotion of justice is an absolute requirement." A General Congregation is the highest authority in the Society, and these words have never been rescinded.
For twenty-five years I have been part of social ministry commissions, committees, advisory groups, and support groups; for ten years I was privileged to be in full-time social ministry. More recently, working in a spirituality centre, my aim was to encourage retreatants to take a broad view of the call they receive from God, to see working for justice as central to that call.
Why do I do what I do? How should I do otherwise?
