For Padre Hurtado the miraculous was not the chief occupation of the saint. Sanctity, rather, consisted in a certain kind of busyness.
If you have never heard of him, a list of the activities he crammed into under twenty years will tell you a great deal: he founded Chile's largest charity, the Hogar de Cristo (literally, "Christ's Home"), helped construct a theology faculty, earned a doctorate, set up a training institute for Catholic union leaders, built a new novitiate for his order, worked as a school teacher, ran a youth organisation, wrote several books, and founded a major national magazine (Mensaje), all the while giving spiritual direction and preaching many retreats.
Future Jesuit general, Fr. Janssens, noted of the young priest, "I have never seen a soul radiate greater apostolic energy". It is not hard to believe him.
