The Hurtado Jesuit Centre
The Hurtado Jesuit Centre in Wapping, in East London, was opened by Fr General Adolfo Nicolás in 2011. It provides a place of welcome in what was a largely run-down and derelict area of the capital until the 1980s, but which is now going through a phase of substantial redevelopment. The Hurtado Centre – named after St Alberto Hurtado SJ who worked among the poor of Chile – offers an environment where people from the neighbourhood can find spiritual companionship through conversation and practical support. Its programme includes retreat days for busy office workers, as well as activities that bring people of different faiths and cultures together. The Centre also provides a haven for spiritual reflection, space for local communities to meet and a base from which to work for social justice in partnership with others.
