Ignatius of Loyola, Letters and Instructions
The largest collection of the letters of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, is now available from The Way Ignatian Book Service in Oxford.
Ignatius is well known for his longer writings, such as the Spiritual Exercises and the Jesuit Constitutions. But he is also the author of more than 6,800 letters, some 370 of which are contained in this new volume, translated into English (from the Spanish). The letters range across a spectrum of personal, political, social, educational, financial and, especially, religious concerns. Depending on the recipient, they can be businesslike, warmly personal, quite courtly, gently reassuring, direct, or stern. They are addressed to a variety of people, from popes and future popes to emperors and kings, from cardinals and bishops to relatives and penitents, and from friends and pilgrims to students and (especially) fellow Jesuits.
