The Jesuit house in Scott Street, Glasgow

Design Awards for Glasgow House

The Jesuit house in Scott Street, Glasgow, last night won two prestigeous awards.

The Saltire Society - whose aim is to preserve all that is best in Scottish tradition and to encourage every new development which can strengthen and enrich the country's cultural life - awarded the Jesuit residence a commendation in its Housing Design Awards 2007.  It was also recognised by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) in their Scotland Good Building Awards.

The architect for the project was Elder & Cannon, who were also responsible for the nearby St Aloysius Junior School (1999) and the Clavius Building of St Aloysius College - both Jesuit educational establishments.  The top three floors of the new house provide living accommodation for ten resident Jesuits, while the ground floor is occupied by the Ignatian Spirituality Centre.

'By bringing light into the building in different ways, we have been able to give variation to the house,' say Elder & Cannon. 'And by opening corridors out into reading spaces and using fire engineering solutions at stairs and voids, we've attempted to overcome the institutional character that can occur in multiple occupancy buildings.'

The Guest of Honour at the ceremony at the Lighthouse in Glasgow was Linda Fabiani, MSP, Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture who presented the Awards.
