Jon Sobrino SJ to speak in Edinburgh and London
Renowned Jesuit Theologian, Fr Jon Sobrino SJ, will be in the UK next month, as the guest of both the British Jesuits and CAFOD. Fr Sobrino will be giving a talk entitled 'Signs of Hope for the 21st Century - Live simply, the poor and Archbishop Romero', on Wednesday June 18 in the Lauriston Jesuit Centre (Sacred Heart Church), Edinburgh. Cardinal Keith O'Brien will deliver the vote of thanks afterwards. The following evening Fr Sobrino will be speaking at Heythrop College in London.
Jon Sobrino SJ was born in Barcelona and entered the Society of Jesus at the age of 18. Much of his life has been spent in El Salvador where he helped to found and subsequently taught at the University of Central America (UCA).
On 16 November 1989, Fr Sobrino narrowly escaped being assassinated by the Salvadoran government. Members of the military broke into the rectory at the UCA and brutally murdered his six fellow Jesuits, their housekeeper and her 15-year old daughter. Fr Sobrino was away at the time.
In 2007, the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith challenged some of Fr Sobrino's theological teachings and admonished him. However, he was not censured or prohibited from teaching or lecturing.
His talks will take place at 7.30pm in the Lauriston Jesuit Centre, Lauriston Street, Edinburgh on Wednesday 18 June, and on Thursday 19 June at 6.30pm in Heythrop College, Kensington Square, London W8 5HQ. Fr Sobrino's latest book 'The Eye of the Needle' will be available at both venues.
