Wimbledon College's 'great honour'
Wimbledon College has become a Royal Society Associate School, with enhanced access to scientific resources. The news was announced on the first day of the new term at the Jesuit secondary school in south west London.
The Royal Society is the UK academy of science and aims to support excellence in teaching and link cutting edge research to the classroom. In the run-up to its 350th anniversary next year, it launched the Associate Schools scheme, to provide enhanced access to Royal Society resources and activities. In the pilot phase of the scheme, it is recruiting one primary and one secondary school from each London borough. Wimbledon College is in the London Borough of Merton.
Royal Society Associate Schools benefit from such resources as access to the Royal Society's unique collection of scientific books and manuscripts and preferential booking for events and lectures, including the Summer Science Exhibition. These benefits and others are available to all teachers within an Associate School, helping to deliver innovative approaches across the curriculum, for example with teaching the History of Science.
'This is a great honour for Wimbledon College and one that can lead to even greater opportunities being made available to our pupils,' says Headmaster, Fr Adrian Porter SJ.
