Jesuits launch Haiti appeal

The British Province of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) has pledged £100,000 to support the relief programme in Haiti.  And Jesuit Missions (JM) has launched an appeal to raise a further £50,000.

'The country, already among the world's most severely poverty-stricken, must now also contend with widespread displacement, loss of life and crippling infrastructural damage following the devastating earthquake,' says JM's Director, Father Tim Curtis SJ. 'We will be able to channel the funds through our Jesuit contacts in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, since, unlike other external agencies who are trying to help the people affected, we already have an infrastructure on the ground.  This means we can channel funds more effectively.  With the assistance of imported doctors, five crisis centres have been opened and a further two are soon to be operational.'

JM has also set up a Just Giving account for the Haiti appeal: www.justgiving.com/haiti-fund.  Donations made using Gift Aid will qualify for an extra 28p in the pound. 'We are asking people to give whatever they can in support of those in such desperate need,' says Fr Tim. 'Every penny of their donations will be passed on, as will all additional Gift Aid contributions.'
