Now Portuguese speakers can pray-as-they-go too!

The Jesuits of Portugal have today (17 February 2010) launched their version of pray-as-you-go, the prayer resource developed by Jesuit Media Initiatives in London for people who wish to enrich their spiritual lives and develop their relationship with God on a daily and personal basis.

passo.a.rezar.net has been in development for almost a year, in association with the Apostleship of Prayer (AOP).  Father Dário Pedroso SJ, the Director of the AOP in Portugal, said they wanted to create a version of pray-as-you-go that was 'adapted to the sociological and religious Portuguese reality'.

'After we had decided on the name of the Portuguese version,' Fr Pedroso continued, 'we contacted Rádio Renascença, a Catholic radio station - the biggest in Portugal - asking for its technical cooperation to record and edit the audio contents.' After this was agreed, the Portuguese Jesuits spent four months preparing materials and were given permission to translate and use the texts prepared by the British Jesuits for the next few months, as a special concession.  The launch on 17 February was preceded by an extensive publicity campaign in the Churches, the media in Portugal and the internet.

Ruth Morris, the Producer of pray-as-you-go at Jesuit Media Initiatives, said: 'pray-as-you-go became a global phenomenon virtually as soon as it was launched on Ash Wednesday 2005 - thanks to the power of the internet and the opportunities that modern technology offered us.  But language was always a barrier.  We're delighted that the Jesuits of Portugal have taken this initiative, and look forward to working with them - and Jesuits from other non-English-speaking parts of the world - in spreading the power of Ignatian Spirituality and the message of the Good News, through i-pods, downloads and the internet.'
