The bells ring out over Liverpool

Liverpool Universities Society of Change Ringers celebrated their 50th anniversary last weekend by holding a bell-ringing competition at St Francis Xavier's Church in Liverpool.  Since its formation the Society has enjoyed a close relationship with the church, which is one of the few Catholic churches in Britain to possess a full ring of eight bells.

Five teams representing each of the decades the Society has been in existence took part.  The winning team was the Noughties - with the group from the 1960s as runners up.

The previous evening (Saturday February 20), the Society celebrated its golden jubilee with a Gala Dinner at Liverpool's Thistle Atlantic Tower Hotel.  Past and present members of the Society from all over the country attended, and the Master of Ceremonies was Edmund Crichton, an old boy of Preston Catholic College, a Jesuit school until Catholic education was reorganised in Preston in 1978.
