Become a Friend of St Francis Xavier

St Francis Xavier's Church in Liverpool (known locally as SFX) is forming an association of 'Friends'.  The official launch will not be until December; but already there is considerable interest in the initiative, according to Brother Ken Vance SJ.

'BBC Radio Merseyside organised a Big History event in St George's Hall at the weekend.  We had a stall on which we pushed the proposed Friends group.  Over 5,000 people passed through the building during Saturday and Sunday, with much interest in SFX.'

St Francis Xavier's is a stunning Victorian, Grade II* listed church in the Everton district of Liverpool.  Opened in 1848, it was once the largest parish in the country, but in the latter half of the 20th century it suffered from neglect.  During the last decade, great progress has been made in bringing the building and the parish back to life.

'There is a still lot to do,' says Ken, 'and as part of the continuing regeneration programme we are going to form a Friends of St Francis Xavier's Church.  The Friends will bring together the wider SFX community.  Everyone who has any interest in and affection for the church will be welcome to join.  Members might be present parishioners, ex-parishioners or their relations, those interested in the history and architecture of the church, ex-SFX College and school pupils, etc.  Whatever their interest, wherever they live, they will be able to join on payment of a reasonable annual subscription.'

If you would like to help in this process you are invited to a first meeting at SFX on Monday, 19 April at 7pm.
