Beautiful scenery: the Brecon Beacons

Walking and prayer
in the Brecon Beacons

This August Bank Holiday, a group of up to a dozen intrepid walkers will be combining prayer and rambling in the Brecon Beacons.  They will be going on a few day long walks in beautiful scenery, sharing some prayer and reflection in the Ignatian tradition and no doubt at some point visiting a local watering-hole or two!

'Mountain Spirituality is mainly for people who like to take some time off and get away from urban environments for a few days,' says David Hothersall, one of the organisers. 'The walks are not meant for experienced climbers or walkers; they are about seven to eight hours with breaks for lunch and rests.  During the walk, we will also put a little time aside to listen to a gospel passage, spend some time in silence and then share our thoughts as each sees fit.  In the evening there will be some space for meditative prayer as well.  We do not follow a rigid formula.'

A pair of walking boots is required but the walks do not require a high level of fitness.  Each weekend attracts between 8-12 people on average with ages between 20 and 40-45.  Everyone mucks in to cook supper in the evening.

Ignatian spirituality is based on the framework for prayer and living developed by the founder of the Jesuits, St Ignatius Loyola.  It involves internal reflection and acknowledgement that God is present in our world and active in all areas of our lives.

Mountain Spirituality will take place in the Brecon Beacons between 27-30 August (Bank Holiday).  The group will be staying at Middle Ninfa Farm Bunkhouse on a quiet hillside overlooking the Usk Valley near Abergavenny.  The accommodation is within the Brecon Beacons National Park on the edge of the newly designated Blaenavon World Heritage Site.  The cost of the weekend will be £60 including all food and accommodation.  For more information please contact mountainspirituality@yahoo.co.uk.

David Hothersall adds: 'Mountain Spirituality would also love to hear from other Ignatian groups or parishes that would like to offer this in their localities across the UK, so that we can share and grow together in this experience.'
