Cardinal Newman

Newman Service in Liverpool

An ecumenical service is being held at Saint Francis Xavier's Church in Liverpool tomorrow, to mark the beatification of Cardinal Newman.  This will be part of a prestigious weekend conference on Newman on Hope University's Childwall campus.

Among the guests at Choral Evensong in the church will be delegates from a variety of international universities and Vatican representatives.

Brother Ken Vance SJ explains the significance of Newman to Liverpool:
'At the time when Newman was made a Cardinal the then rector of SFX sent him a letter of congratulations.  His reply is in the Jesuit archives in London and we will be displaying it - along with several others of his letters, his biretta and a newly commissioned banner - in the church over that weekend.'

The Ecumenical Celebration of Choral Evensong will take place at St Francis Xavier's Church, Everton, starting at 6pm tomorrow.
