Tributes to Fr Dean Brackley SJ
There have been widespread tributes paid to Fr Dean Brackley SJ, one of the Jesuits who volunteered to replace the priests murdered at the University of Central America in San Salvador in 1989, who has died.
Julian Filochowski, former Director of CAFOD and Chairman of the Romero Trust, called him simply: 'A great man'. Rafael de Sivatte, another of the six Jesuits who went to El Salvador to take the places of their murdered brothers, described the news of Dean's death as both 'painful and joyful', saying that Dean was 'our brother, friend, father, and companion in solidarity'. Fr Dean Brackley was no stranger to the Jesuits and the Church in Britain. In 2009, he delivered the Romero Lecture at the Lauriston Jesuit Centre in Edinburgh. The text of his talk is available below.
Details of his funeral will be announced shortly. In the meantime, we remember in prayer those individuals and communities he served as a pastor over the years and their struggles with injustice, and we pray that he may rest in peace.
