How far back to the social roots of Marian devotion go? On the evening of 25 May (5-6 p.m.) Prof. Thomas Mathews, John Langeloth Loeb Professor Emeritus in the History of Art from New York University, will deliver a special lecture at Campion Hall on the "Dawn of Marian Devotion".

The attached picture depicts a fifth century wood carving of Mary, believed to be one of the oldest surviving icons of the Virgin. Gabriel's foot enters into the lower right hand corner of the fragment, marking the scene as the Annunciation.
