The time is now

Jesuit Missions will be joining the Climate Coalition and hundreds of other organisations and individuals as they come together on mass to speak up against climate change.

We are running out of time to meet the 1.5C temperature increase agreed in Paris in 2015. Individuals are making a change, now we need the government to cooperate and commit to a net zero emissions target.

“Climate Change is affecting people across the world,” says Paul Chitnis, Director of Jesuit Missions. “The increase in temperatures caused by global carbon emissions has led to an increased frequency of climate related natural disasters often affecting the poorest people in the world. We are inviting people to join us as we share our concerns with leaders who can make a difference.”

Climate change has a significantly larger impact on the less developed regions of the world. Those who live in the most marginalised areas are often the most vulnerable, due to less stable housing and having less time to respond to disaster warnings. Bernie Alton works for Jesuit Missions partner SLB in the Philippines, who has been supporting those affected by Tyhpoon Haiyan in 2013.She says, “We are already feeling the effects of climate change with an increase in the strength of typhoons. It is hugely impacting some of the poorest communities, particularly those who live close to the seas. People are losing their homes, livelihoods and lives. We need everyone to take action around the world now, before it’s too late.”

Pope Francis spoke of the importance of looking after our environment in his encyclical Laudato Si. We cannot delay any longer. The time is now.

The intention is to have as many people as possible to turn up and meet their MP’s so that together, as a community, we can make some real noise and not be ignored. Put your faith into action and sign up today.

Join Jesuit Missions on Wednesday 26th June 2019 to lobby our MP’s to tell them that the UK can no longer contribute to climate change and the destruction of our common home.
