Ignatian spirituality

Working with Christ means setting about the tasks he is more concerned about, in the way he wants.  So we need to listen to him before we make choices.  We call this 'discernment' and we do it by paying attention to our feelings.  When God is drawing us it is gentle, energizing and we are at ease.  When we are heavy, awkward and uneasy, it is God's way of saying 'not that'.

When we love somebody very much, we may have a dream for them, a dream that will make them more free and more truly themselves.  God loves us like that.  So discernment is about getting in touch with God's dream for us.  One way to discover it is to recognise our deepest desires, the desires God put inside us when we were created.  Jesus said to people during His life, 'What do you want me to do for you?'  How would you answer that question?  This is one way of getting in touch with our deepest desires.
