The Hurtado Jesuit Centre in Wapping is advertising for a Programmes Manager on a fixed-term contract to cover maternity leave. A developing work of the social apostolate of the Jesuits in Britain, the Centre runs programmes promoting hospitality, social justice and spirituality in this part of East London. The Programmes Manager helps to research, develop and implement the programmes put on by the Centre, in collaboration with its director.

The Programmes Manager is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Hurtado Centre building, in co-ordination with Jesuit Refugee Service UK, which has the most active use of the Centre from Mondays to Fridays. The centre has also hosted exhibitions with local artists, run a high-profile series of seminars on Ethical Investment and encourages community engagement with Catholic Social Teaching through talks and ‘Philosophy on Tap’ evenings.

Among the successful candidate’s other duties and responsibilities will be the co-ordination of volunteers, fundraising and publicity for the Centre’s activities. Personal qualities include an understanding of the mission of the Jesuits, Catholic Social Teaching and related issues, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and management abilities – of the building and garden and over such issues as health and safety.

This contract for a Programmes Manager at the Hurtado Jesuit Centre will be for a fixed term, commencing on a date to be agreed (probably around the end of April) and continuing until the present staff member returns to work after her period of maternity leave.  Although it is not possible to confirm at this point exactly how long the present staff member's leave will last, it could be for 12 months, at which time, the contract will automatically expire unless extended by mutual agreement.
