On the occasion of the 350th anniversary since his death, here a brief note about Fr Ferdinand Poulton SJ, born in 1605. Sent to the English Mission in 1640, he worked zealously in the Lancashire Disctrict until he died in 1666 administering to the plague-stricken.
In this month of May we’re asked to pray with Pope Francis for respect for women: that in every country of the world, women may be honoured and respected, and that their essential contribution to society may be highly esteemed. Of all places, in Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales, I was introduced to a beautiful depiction of the Annunciation. It was there that I saw for the first time Henry Ossawa Tanner’s painting The Annunciation, a striking rendition of the angel Gabriel’s appearance to a virgin named Mary.
