Explore Your Archives campaign 2014

POST BY RSomerset

This week the Archives and Records Association has launched its second annual Explore Your Archives awareness campaign. The aim is to increase public awareness of the vital role of archives in our society and to celebrate the collections held in services across England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland. To find out more and to see what events are happening near you, visit www.exploreyourarchive.org.

Here in the Jesuits in Britain Archives we have created an exhibition on the Jesuit Chaplains who served in WWI. We have also used the EYA campaign poster template to create our own ARCHI’VE REMEMBERED poster which features a photograph of Fr Francis Woodlock SJ in uniform as well as two records about his time as Military Chaplain during WWI. One record is a certificate for Mention in a Despatch from General Sir Douglas Haig dated 30 April 1916 for gallant and distinguished services in the Field, which was produced by the War Office on 1 March 1919. The other document is a Renewal of Contract of Acting Chaplain engaged for Duty with the Expeditionary Force with the renewal date 1 April 1916, which Fr Woodlock dated and signed on 18 March 1916. Reproductions of both of these items are currently on display in the Archive.

If you would like to find out more about the Chaplains or to explore what other material is held in the Archive contact the Archivist at archives@gbsj.org to arrange a visit.
