When we pray the Lord’s Prayer we ask for God’s kingdom to come, God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.

But that can sound rather cold and impersonal. When we hear St Paul describing the effects of the Holy Spirit of God as love (charity), joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self-control, it sounds more encouraging. And St Paul adds elsewhere in his letters humility and forgiveness, everything that is excellent and honourable and worthy of praise. cf Gal 5.22, Col 3.12-17, Phil 4.4-9 We certainly welcome all that on earth.

Which brings me to the point of how I found God in Wilkinson’s. Most of us know of this chain of large department stores offering a wide range of goods cheaply. I was looking for some picture frames, and chose four which I rather clumsily tried to gather together under
my arm.

One frame started to slip, and I was suddenly conscious of a young woman beside me: and momentarily so vividly aware of the Spirit of ‘kindness’ and ‘gentleness’ I hardly noticed what she looked like: I can’t even remember if I found words to thank her! I hope so.

Such an ordinary everyday helping hand? Yet that Spirit was the Spirit of the Father and of the Son. When you help me I know Christ is present. cf Matt 24.31f When you smile at me I know God’s love is real. cf John 15.12

If we can find God in Wilkinson’s we can find God anywhere. The gift of faith. heart-warmingly, makes us want God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven - through ourself.
