Fr Charles Plater SJ with Jimmy
Whilst sorting through the acquired archive of Plater College (formerly Catholic Workers College) we discovered several records relating Jimmy - the "Jesuit" dog. These include a poem written by Fr Charles Plater SJ (1875-1921) to honour Jimmy, whose dog he was, as well as several photo postcards featuring Jimmy. There also is a glass plate negative, and another photograph showing Jimmy pulling Fr Plater in a wheelchair. Digging a bit deeper, we found more about Jimmy among the...
Edmund Campion SJ
Edmund Campion, born in London in 1540, was soon recognised as one of the most talented scholars of his generation.  He was a master of Latin and Greek literature and philosophy, and distinguished himself for his oratory while at Oxford.  After speaking before Queen Elizabeth, he won the patronage of Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and the Queen’s favourite.Truly, my ingenious young man, you are much beholden to the Queen’s Majesty.   I have been commanded by her to ask...
Black and white photograph of five Jesuits in chef whites around a large cake
Working on our photographic collection in the Jesuits in Britain Archives, I came across an interesting story of how a cake has changed a Temple!  It all began when I tried to date a photograph showing Br Laurence O’Hara SJ and four novices in Manresa, Roehampton with a rather fancy cake.*  I found an article written by Br O’Hara SJ in Letters and Notices about the event. From this I learnt that in 1904 the Jubilee of the Definition of the Immaculate Conception was being...

Jesuits in Britain 2014 Calendar front page
Some thoughts from the ‘Jesuit Calendar 2014’ may be helpful in finding God in all things. We are not human beings having a spiritual experience.  We are spiritual beings who have a human experience.  Teilhard de Chardin SJ An optimist, in my view,  is someone who has the conviction that God knows, can do and will do what is best for humankind. Pedro Arrupe SJ When you get rid of your fear of failure and your tensions about succeeding you can be yourself. You are no longer driving with your...

If someone hasn’t written yet on the subject  of email and spirituality, I am sure they will soon. Much is said about the social media of Facebook and twitter, while the old fashioned email hardly gets a mention. Yet for many people email can dominate, define and direct their day.  When I get up in the morning, do I switch on my computer immediately (assuming I have switched it off!), anxious to see if anyone has communicated with me while I have been asleep?  Depressed to find...
