Fr Tony Horan SJ at 90
Congratulations to Fr Tony Horan SJ who celebrated his 90th birthday on Sunday.
Parishioners at Corpus Christi Jesuit parish in Boscombe on the south coast held a memorable celebration in the parish coffee lounge.
Parishioner and CLC member Michelle Ellison said “Fr Tony only wanted a small crowd, mostly CLC members, but also a few friends who he’s met during his six years down here, and the spiritual director Evelyn Marolet, who made the trip all the way from Jersey.”
Fr Tony, who joined the Jesuits in 1952, reflected on ninety years of life and 54 years of active ministry: teaching and chaplaincy in Leeds and Preston; spirituality work at Loyola Hall, St Beuno’s and Mount Street Jesuit Centre, as well as a spell at the novitiate in Birmingham. “More than anything, I am overwhelmed with the gratitude of people,” he said, “I have ministered in so many places, and people still keep in touch and say ‘thank you’ – there’s someone coming to see me tomorrow who I gave some advice to 48 years ago which he still remembers! I just want to say ‘thank you’ to God!”
Fr Tony also offered thanks to party organisers John and Paula Fallon and to professional cellist Joseph Kooz who provided musical accompaniment to the party.
Fr Tony makes a trip to London this week for another celebration with colleagues from his time at the Mount Street Centre. Once back in Boscombe he will continue supporting five people with the 19th annotation (a retreat in daily life based on the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius), as well as leading monthly Ignatian days of prayer.
Ad multos annos Fr Tony!
