Martin Scorsese guest of honour at launch of Pope’s new book
Sharing the Wisdom of Time by Pope Francis and friends will be launched at a major event in the Vatican this afternoon. Guest of honour will be Martin Scorsese who features in the book. The launch will be attended by several hundred people, including a number of cardinals. The Pope will answer questions from both old and young on the topics covered in this inspiring collection.
The event has been livestreamed on Vatican News website.
The book, which includes the stories of older people from around the globe, was especially commissioned by Francis following the success of the New York Times bestseller, Dear Pope Francis. It is illustrated with stunning photographic portraits taken by National Geographic photographer Paul Audia.
In Sharing the Wisdom of Time Pope Francis brings young and old together – helping each to confront a changing world. The lessons learned by older generations become a gift to the young, empowering them to step into the world of tomorrow.
Amongst the many older people from all around the world featured are two British people: Ann Garnett, 72, describes how a Jesuit spiritual director helped her to move on after the end of her marriage; and Peter Broadbent, 75, explains how services in sign language brought him closer to God. An Irish Jesuit, Des O’Grady SJ from Dublin, also contributes, describing how he sees some light in the darkness of living with Alzheimer’s.
Commenting on the book, Cecilia West of Messenger Publications says, “Many agree that our world is a mess, but is anyone listening to older people who have seen it all before? They have suffered war, hunger and international tensions in times past.”
West also notes that on a personal level older people have known heartbreak, loss, and times of happiness and inspiration. “Many older people have a real gift of wisdom. This book gives us an opportunity to listen to that wisdom, and to hear Pope Francis’ reflections on what they have to say.”
Sharing the Wisdom of Time by Pope Francis and friends will be published by Jesuit publishers around the world. Messenger Publications, Dublin will publish the book in Ireland and the UK on Tuesday 23 October 2018, priced at €24.95/£22.50.
