Mount 175 - A year of celebrations

What a year it has been at Mount St Mary’s College, the historic and beautiful day and boarding school for boys and girls, nestled in the picturesque village of Spinkhill, just south of Sheffield.

The past year has seen generations of Old Mountaineers, current families, staff past and present and the surrounding community join together for a wonderful year of anniversary celebrations, marking 175 years since the College first opened its doors.

A Grand Celebration Week began the celebrations in May 2017 with a number of events including Sports Awards, an Academy Concert, Fashion Show & Afternoon Tea, Children’s Theatre event and a Grand Academy Ball for over 500 guests.

Throughout the year there have been further special events taking place such as the 175 celebratory mass at Farm Street in Mayfair, London followed by a dinner at the Lansdowne Club for Old Mountaineers and friends of the Mount.

The Mount choir enjoyed a spectacular tour to Malta singing a special mass in the Mdina Cathedral and featuring on Maltese television. The College hosted a Global Schools’ Conference for Young Leaders with visitors from across Europe, South America and the USA. Visitors from closer to home included BBC Look North along with their iconic Red Sofa with a live TV broadcast from the Mount just one of the highlights.

A very sunny week at the end of May 2018 saw the 175th anniversary year draw to a close with an even more ambitious week of celebrations – no less than 10 events in 8 action packed days. The Mount Golf Classic debuted at the prestigious Lindrick Golf Club and a new event ‘Strictly 175’ saw a group of brave students and teachers take to the dancefloor, each vying to win the Mount Glitterball trophy.

Many of the events launched in May 2017 were back by popular demand with even higher audiences than last year.

This milestone year culminated with the Grand Academy Ball on Saturday 26th May. As the photographs from the talented Mark Hallam demonstrate, a superb evening of food, entertainment and fun was enjoyed in and around the stunning Mount Marque.

Mount St Mary’s College in 2018 is a vibrant and growing school. Although much has changed in its remarkable history the Mount preserves and cherishes its Jesuit identity. Care of the individual and the pursuit of excellence are at the heart of everyday life.

Whilst the majority of the students at the school are from the local area, travelling daily from Sheffield, Chesterfield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Mansfield and beyond, many using the fleet of school minibuses, around 20% of students come from countries around the world.

Students come to live alongside the British students from many European countries as well as many from further afield including Mexico, Chile, Fiji, the Middle East, Hong Kong, China and Nigeria to name a few. This creates a diverse, cosmopolitan environment, reflective of the wider world, where students learn to live and work alongside one another, preparing for all that comes next.

Sport has been a long standing area of strength at the Mount. And whilst rugby and hockey remain strong and successful sports, the Mount has moved with the times and offers a broad range of sporting opportunities in athletics, cricket, swimming, fencing, shooting, pentathlon, biathlon, fitness and much more.

The investment in facilities and staff means the Mount offers a sports program that ensures that all students are able to access sport throughout their week, whether as a novice or at the elite level that a notable number achieve.

The reputation for excellence in Music is well established. Throughout the year the various choirs, individuals and ensembles create highlights for all to enjoy. Over 75% of students at Barlborough Hall play at least one instrument and more than 40% at the senior school do so.

Concerts are performed each term and whilst the showcase Academy Concert tops the bill at the end of May, many other opportunities to perform are offered. Friends of the school and members of the wider community are always welcome to attend.

As this academic year now comes to a close, many students are now eagerly await their exam results in August. Planning is well underway for next year as we prepare to welcome the new intake of pupils in September which will see many more join the current students on their exciting Mount journey.
