Michael Beattie SJ
I am Fr Michael Beattie and I have been a member of the British Province of the Society of Jesus for almost sixty years.
Most of my active life has been spent as the parish priest, in charge of St George’s Worcester, The Sacred Heart Wimbledon, Farm Street Church, The Sacred Heart Edinburgh and Corpus Christi Boscombe, Bournemouth. For 27 years I was very active as the National Secretary of the Apostleship of Prayer which occupation took me into parishes the length and breadth of the UK and sometimes abroad, promulgating this “School of Prayer”. Currently I live at Mount St Mary’s College where, during the week I celebrate Mass in school and help out in various ways.
It is a long time since I became a Jesuit but the influences that pointed me to the Jesuits are still clear in my mind and heart. 1) An excellent, loving and “faith-filled” catholic family. 2) The wonderful influence of Jesuit scholastics (one of two of them still alive as very old priests) who taught me when I was at school.
Over the years I have become more and more convinced that the dictum of St Ignatius Loyola “to find God in all things” is something that should be communicated and understood as widely as possible and I am grateful to have at my disposal the coordination of the Apostleship of Prayer which, with the grace of God, is the easiest and most accessible way of bringing, to young and old alike, some sort of realisation of this great truth. To find God in all things brings into sharp, down to earth focus, the great Ignatian motto, “Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam - For the Greater Glory of God”.
