Saving our Common Earth – no time to lose

Jesuit Missions invites you to join us on Friday 13th September as we welcome the Commonwealth Secretary General Rt Hon. Patricia Scotland QC to Farm Street Parish in Mayfair.

Baroness Scotland will speak about action taken by the Commonwealth in tackling climate change. The fifty-three member states of the Commonwealth include eighteen island states who are among those suffering the most from rising sea levels as a consequence of the changing climate. The Commonwealth states, whose waters include 42% of the world’s coral reefs, have also suffered significant coral reef loss due to climate change. This talk comes during the year that the Commonwealth is celebrating its 70th anniversary since the signing of the London declaration. This marked the point at which the legacy of the British Empire was replaced with a partnership of equal member countries sharing a set of principles and values. The Commonwealth Secretariat was established in 1965 and supports the Commonwealth member countries to achieve development, democracy and peace.

The event will take place just a few days before an important UN climate change summit hosted by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, which aims to continue the momentum and accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The talk will be followed by a Q&A and teas & coffees.
All welcome.
