St Wilfrid's Parish

St Wilfrid's
1 Winckley Square
United Kingdom

There are records of Jesuit priests working in Preston from 1701 and St Wilfrid's parish in Preston was established less than 100 years later. Fr Joseph Dunn, an ex-Jesuit, who continued to minister in the town after the suppression of the Society in 1773, was the driving force behind the building of the church. St Wilfrid’s Church in Chapel Street, near the centre of Preston, was opened in 1793. Since then, it has continued to serve an active Catholic population. Although the present church has been renovated and modernised over the past 200 years, it was never really re-ordered for the post-Vatican II liturgy. It retains the altar rails and high altar with very little modification.
