The new Easter term begins today at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire and with it comes the announcement of its new Headmaster. Mr John Browne, currently the Headmaster of St Aloysius College in Glasgow, will take over from Mr Andrew Johnson at Stonyhurst from this September.

In announcing Mr Browne’s appointment, Mr John Cowdall, the Chairman of the Board of Governors at Stonyhurst College, praised Mr Johnson for his ten years of leadership and said that Mr Browne would be joining the Jesuit school at an exciting time in its development.

“Mr John Browne brings to Stonyhurst an abundance of experience and a successful track record at a senior level in independent, boarding and Catholic education,” he said. “We are delighted to welcome him, his wife Marie and son William to Lancashire at an exciting time in the school’s development.  Mr Andrew Johnson has contributed much to Stonyhurst during his ten year tenure at the College and has overseen several major capital projects including the new boarding house that opened in 2010 and the new Refectory which opened in 2013. The College now has the highest number of pupils for many years and in the current year its GCSE and A level examination results were the best ever.” Mr Johnson has been appointed as Headmaster of St Benedict's School in Ealing with effect from 1 September 2016.

A beacon of Jesuit education

John Browne is no stranger to Jesuit education. He was taught in the Jesuit tradition at St Ignatius College in Enfield, North London, before studying for his BA in Music from the University of Bristol; he also has a postgraduate LLB from City University, London and a Masters in Business Administration. Before being appointed to St Aloysius’ College in Glasgow in 2013, he was Deputy Headmaster at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire, Head Master of Westminster Cathedral Choir School, and had held Director of Music and Assistant Director of Music posts at Berkhamsted School and The Latymer School.

“I am delighted to be joining the Stonyhurst family at such an exciting time,” says Mr Browne. “I look forward to building on the legacy left by Andrew Johnson and in particular to working together with pupils, parents and staff to further develop Stonyhurst College as a beacon of Jesuit education”.
