Feast of St Ignatius

Michael Beattie SJ
Year by year, the world over, Jesuit priests and brothers come together on 3lst July to celebrate the feast day of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The community here at Farm Street is no exception and as Jesuits we are always delighted to share the Eucharist and this celebration with you all and we thank you for being with us this evening. The Pamplona war wounds in the form of a shattered leg and a lengthy and very painful convalescence were the start of a life changing experience for St. Ignatius....
St Ignatius’ Day is the 31 July, and historically Jesuit Communities have marked the day with Masses, processions and feasts.  In the archives we have records of these events from the 19th and 20th centuries, showing how Jesuits celebrated St Ignatius’ Day, and how these celebrations changed over the course of the years. The Mount Street Jesuit Community recorded its daily services, meals, and comings and goings of individual Jesuits, as well as larger feasts and other events, in The...

The life of the saint whose feast we celebrate on 31 July was changed completely when he read the stories of the saints who had come before him. But tradition has it that Ignatius had a devotion to St Peter even before his conversion as a convalescent, and that it was Peter’s intercession that brought about his recovery. Though a strong and firm leader, Ignatius was a humble man.  He spoke of himself in the third person as the Pilgrim and in that account of his...

Thank you so much for staying with us throughout July as we went through the works of the Jesuits in honour of St Ignatius' Feast Day.Our prayer is that you have been inspired by the many stories you have read on how the Jesuits, and those that work alongside them, in following the steps of their founder, are making a change in people’s lives. If you missed any of the emails, remember that you can still catch up via the links below....
From 'The Life of St Ignatius Loyola' by Peter Paul Rubens
To educate the youth of Europe? To fight the spread of Protestantism? While many people would guess that one or both of these ambitions drove Ignatius of Loyola to found the Jesuits, he actually had something else in mind: a mission to the Muslim world. For the feast of St Ignatius, Damian Howard SJ considers how ‘Islam haunted Ignatius’s understanding of his calling’ and celebrates the fruitful work of the many Jesuits who have tried to realise Ignatius’s vision in...
