GC36 elected the first Superior General from outside of Europe: Fr Arturo Sosa SJ from Venezuela. It was the first time that a General Congregation had been addressed by a Jesuit Pope. And it was also a first for six Jesuit Brothers, who took part in the General Congregation as ‘...

"The last time I saw the Master General of the Dominicans was in Westminster Cathedral in the early summer when he was the guest of honour at an 800th anniversary of the Dominicans in Britain. Yesterday he was before my eyes again, this time as the main celebrant at the solemn opening Mass for the Jesuit General Congregation at the Church of the Gesu in central Rome. This role might seem a little strange for a big solemn Jesuit occasion, but there is a centuries old tradition that when a...

The logo of the 36th General Congregation
It was an exhortation of Pope Francis himself which inspired the logo for General Congregation 36 (GC 36). Speaking on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Restoration of the Society of Jesus on 27 September 2014, he referred to the passage from St Luke’s Gospel in which Jesus told his disciples to “Row out into the deep water” (Lk 5:4). The IHS monogram with the blue green waves, cross and flame for GC36 represent many of the challenges the Society – and the...

Jesuit brothers meet Pope Francis in Rome, September 2014 - SJweb
Men who dedicate their lives to the Church as a religious lay brother exercise a daily priesthood in their work, even though they are not ordained as priests. This is the view strongly expressed in a long-awaited document from the Vatican about the vocation of men and women who serve in religious institutes without being ordained. The document ‘Identity and Mission of the Religious Brother in the Church’ affirms that although they are not ordained as priests, they still exercise a daily...
