Peter Gallagher SJ invites us to reflect on life’s tests. Prayer can be full of scrutiny and challenge, but God's mercy is our survival resource.Do not put us to the test. Humbly we ask God not to test us. We are not strong enough to bear much testing. Yet tests come and, with God’s help, we endure them successfully. Sometimes we survive what tests us by a mixture of God’s mercy and the strength of others. The goodness of some can save us allAbraham negotiating about the fate of the cities of...

Solidarity, joy, love: there are different ways the marks of Jesus on our lives become visible. Peter Gallagher SJ invites us to reflect on the effect of the divine ink in our relationships.     In our tattooing age we might miss the force of the words in Galatians: the marks on my body are those of Jesus (Galatians 6.17). Decorative inscriptions on bodies are common, but the marks (stigmata is the Greek here) which are ‘of Jesus’ are rarer. The stigmata are the wounds...

Do you ever wonder if we might have missed something essential in the faith? Does it sometimes seem as if all the really faithful followers of Christ have understood something which we haven’t quite grasped or haven’t properly assimilated? The way some people live their religion – with enthusiasm, with joy, with commitment – makes us suspect that they have somehow taken it on board differently than us. Some years ago, I knew a young woman, a teacher, whose dearest wish in life was to be married and to have a large family. However, her first problem was that she couldn’t find a “good man”. Apparently there is a widespread shortage of “good” men. There are lots of men around, but apparently not many “good” men. But, eventually, when she was 32, she found a possible candidate. After only two years of courtship, agonised decision–making and huge telephone bills, they were married and settled down...
Near the end of this month, Friday, 29th September, we celebrate the Feast of St. Michael, St. Gabriel and St. Raphael, and with them all the angels. That has prompted me to ask  :How many angels are there in Farm Street Church?I have gone round counting carefully and I have found 98 in the church and its chapels, and 20 on the outside. The Victorians at the time our church was built were very much drawn to angels. We meet them in their paintings, especially those of the pre-Raphaelites....

“I tell you that her sins, her many sins, must have been forgiven her, or she would not have shown such great love.”The best – the very best - church leader I have ever known is not a priest, or a nun, or indeed any other kind of “professional” religious. He is an Amerindian lay church leader and he works in a Church community in a little village in the Amazon, many thousands of miles away from here. Perhaps I should explain: in the Rupununi, there are about 30,000...
