week of guided prayer

Week of guided prayer opening liturgy
The Jesuits’ spirituality outreach team is having a busy week.  On Sunday they began a week of guided prayer(WGP) in Manchester at the Jesuit-led Universities’ Catholic chaplaincy.  46 participants have signed up – a mixture of students, staff and local people from nearby Earlham parish.  They are supported by a team of twelve prayer guides.“This is a particularly grace-filled week” observed Steve Hoyland, the team leader.“Three years ago we held a week of guided prayer here in...
A team of Jesuit novices with Fr Simon Bishop SJ and Vron Smith recently joined a group of prisoners in HMP Hewell in the West Midlands, to accompany them on a week of guided prayer. It was a week of surprises, with prisoners from a wide range of age, race and even faith background. Novice Luke Taylor nSJ explained, "We offered a variety of Ignatian ways of prayer. Some prisoners shared one-on-one with a prayer guide while others drew their own spiritual journeys. Some entered scripture through...

I was instantly attracted to the week of guided prayer advertised in the parish newsletter because of its description and emphasis on ‘daily life’.  Having recently become a mother for the first time, my life and its daily rhythm have changed dramatically. During the first months of my daughter’s life, she rarely allowed me to put her down at all, let alone maintain my previous routine of quiet prayer and reflection. Amongst all the preparation for our new baby, my...

An expert team of spiritual directors is landing in Wimbledon in two weeks to deliver a week of guided prayer or “retreat in daily life” to the community of Sacred Heart parish and Wimbledon College.  Also joining the retreat will be staff from Jesuit Missions and students from Heythrop College. The Jesuits founded Sacred Heart parish in 1887 and Wimbledon College in 1892.  Although they left the parish in 2012, there remain three Jesuit houses on Edge Hill, one of which is...

Fr David, our parish priest accosted us when we were leaving mass saying “I need your help”! He asked my wife, Deirdre, and I to be part of a group of twelve attending the Ignatian Week of Guided Prayer because he felt it would be beneficial to us. We said “yes” immediately, not knowing what the week would truly involve apart from the introductory Sunday session for one hour and giving one hour each day to the retreat, half an hour of prayer and half an hour with a...
Nine male prisoners mainly in their 20s and 30s, took part in a Week of Guided Prayer in Brixton Prison. One man was in segregation but was able to have a fruitful retreat thanks to daily visits from the chaplain for spiritual direction. The participants were dedicated and attended each day.God was definitely at work before and during the retreat and will continue to be now it has finished. We had initially planned for four Jesuit priests to help as spiritual guides but three of them had to...
Week of guided prayer at Manchester Catholic chaplaincy
In the heart of Manchester, unprecedented numbers of young people are flocking to the Manchester Universities’ Catholic Chaplaincy to discover God this Lent. Over 75 students signed up to participate in a Week of Guided prayer run by the Jesuit chaplains there. This number of students even surpassed Oxford’s record of 63 students, making it the most successful of its kind in the country. The Week of Guided Prayer initiative, while not exclusively existing for students, has been so successfully...
Christ and the woman taken in adultery Pieter Breugel, Courtauld Institute
Before embarking on the retreat in daily life, I was feeling more and more like my Christian faith was trapped in my private mind, only popping out briefly for discussions and at Sunday Mass. This was very ironic because, as a student of Theology, I was constantly being reminded by great thinkers that Christianity is not a private experience or about a weekly fix of grace. It was an insight that my prayer guide, David (David Stewart SJ), would later sum up with the phrase, “the sacrament of the...
Stephen Hoyland leads retreat in Oxford
A Week of Guided Prayer is taking place at the Oxford University Catholic Chaplaincy, starting on Sunday. The event is open to Christians of all denominations, not simply Catholic students who study at the University, with an ecumenical team of prayer guides and ministers from other Churches involved. The Week of Guided Prayer is described as ‘a retreat for people who are far too busy to go on retreat'. Participants are invited to spend 30 minutes in personal prayer with the Scriptures each day...
The parish group in Falmouth
Perhaps it was because we set out on a journey starting from Flanders that I was prompted to wonder about how a group of 5 Jesuits would have been received in Cornwall to carry out a parish mission a hundred years ago. My father went to a Methodist boarding school there not long after the First World War, and I remember his stories which gave a flavour of the religious sentiments of that time. The parish priest at St Mary Immaculate in Falmouth was keen to reassure us that the local Catholics...
