The Whitechapel Centre’ Service of Remembrance at SFX
St Francis Xavier Church has been privileged to host the Service of Remembrance for the Whitechapel Centre, the leading homeless and housing charity for the Liverpool region.
The organisation works with people and for people who are sleeping rough, living in hostels or struggling to manage their accommodation. The Whitechapel Centre is committed to helping people find and maintain a home and learn the life skills essential for independent living.
The Service of Remembrance on the 2nd of November was dedicated to all those who lived and died on the streets, along with those who have cared for them. The names read out for the years of 2017 and 2018 during the liturgy equates to one person, man and woman, per week having died experiencing homelessness.
The organisation is situated right opposite SFX’s Church. The parish has been involved with their Service of Remembrance for about ten years now, as the Whitechapel Centre is one of the church's community neighbours, renting the old Saint Francis Xavier’s primary school building from the Archdiocese.
Deb Primary, Team Manager at the Whitechapel Centre, said: “those who attended were glad of the space to reflect on those who they have known and lost. We hope in the future to be able to give more opportunities for people to gather in prayer and conversation in such a beautiful setting as SFX Church.”
