World day of prayer for creation

Pope Francis has set up in the Catholic Church a “World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation” which will be celebrated on September 1st annually.

The Pope writes that the ecological crisis calls us to a profound spiritual conversion “whereby the effects of our encounter with Jesus Christ become evident in our relationship with the world around us.” He continues, “living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience.”

The day of prayer, the pope maintains, will give individuals and communities an opportunity to implore God's help in protecting creation and an opportunity to ask God's forgiveness "for sins committed against the world in which we live."

Pope Francis said he had been inspired by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians, who have been praying for the environment on this date since 1989.

“The celebration of this day, on the same date as the Orthodox Church, will be a valuable opportunity to bear witness to our growing communion with our Orthodox brothers and sisters,” the Pope concluded.

A Prayer for our Earth   by Pope Francis from Laudato Si’

“All powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.

Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty.
Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one.

O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes.
Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light.
T
hank you for being with us each day.
Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace.”

This is a prayer for sharing with all those who believe in a God who is the all-powerful creator. For more prayers and prayer resources, visit www.CatholicClimateMovement.global/world-day-of-prayer
