From the organiser

True to our word, this month the film club moves away from stories of murder and civil war to the more reflective theme of ‘the meaning of life’! The Tree of Life is a 2011 American coming-of-age drama, written and directed by Terence Malik (Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line) and featuring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain. The film chronicles the origin and meaning of life by way of a middle-aged man’s childhood memories of his family living in 1950s Texas, interspersed with imagery of the origins of the known universe and the inception of life on Earth. Cool, eh?! With three Oscar nominations, in 2011 the film won the Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and featured highly in the BBC’s poll of the Greatest American Films. Enjoy.
