Our History

Missionaries in hostile lands

The arrival of the first Jesuit mission to England in 1580 marks the beginning of a story of great bravery and sacrifice. From 1580 to 1680, Jesuits were hunted and martyred by the authorities at a time when the practice of Catholicism in England, Wales and Scotland was illegal. These Jesuit missionaries returned to support and sustain an underground Church before Catholic emancipation.
