Healthy Spiritual Direction and Understanding Spiritual Abuse

March 9, 2023

This online Manresa Day for Spiritual Directors (and other people with a listening component to their ministry) is led by Dr Lisa Oakley, Associate Professor in Applied Psychology at University of Chester.

Course overview

As society is deepening its understanding of abuse in all its forms, spiritual abuse is perhaps the least well understood. Spiritual directors seek to work in a healthy environment which respects the autonomy and choices of the individual receiving direction but to do this well they need a good understanding of what constitutes a positive context and what tends towards spiritual abuse.

Course outline

This workshop will consist of four times of input, followed by small group sharing:

1 What is spiritual abuse?

2 What is the impact of spiritual abuse?

3 What does a good response to spiritual abuse look like?

4 What is healthy spiritual direction?

This day was offered through the London Jesuit Centre in May 2021. The day will be given with updated resources in the light of developments over the last 18 months.
