Performed by the Sacred Arts Festival Singers under the direction of Calum Robertson, with organist Max Carsley and a brass ensemble from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the programme honours Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810–1876), one of the most influential composers of English sacred music.
Grandson of the great Methodist hymn writer Charles Wesley and son of the composer Samuel Wesley, Samuel Sebastian Wesley transformed Anglican church music through his anthems, service settings and organ works, many of which remain central to cathedral worship today.
The concert also looks to the future with the premiere of three newly commissioned works by winners of the 2025 Young Composers’ Competition, celebrating the continuing vitality of sacred music.
