Disabled by Design: The Human Impact of the Hostile Environment on People Seeking Asylum

Thursday 14 May 2026 | 6.00–7.00pm | Online

SOAS and Jesuit Refugee Service UK will launch a major new report exploring how the UK’s Hostile Environment not only excludes people seeking asylum, but can actively create and deepen disability.

Drawing on workshops with people who have experienced destitution and the asylum system firsthand, Disabled by Design examines the human impact of immigration policies including enforced poverty, barriers to healthcare, NHS charging, and exclusion from community life.

The webinar will feature the report’s authors and expert contributors, including Dr Nicolette Busuttil (SOAS), Dr Sophie Cartwright (JRS UK), Dr Rebecca Yeo (University of Exeter), and Dr Clara Della Croce (SOAS), who will chair the discussion.

The event is co-hosted by the Centre for Human Rights Law at SOAS and Jesuit Refugee Service UK. Automated live captions will be available.
