The Ballad of Wallis Island is a charming 2025 comedy-drama that has won praise for its warmth, humour and heartfelt storytelling, following an eccentric lottery winner’s touching attempt to reunite his favourite folk duo on a remote island.

Film: The Ballad of Wallis Island (100 minutes)

The Film Club returns to the Arrupe Hall this month following a full house at January’s screening of La Vita Bella, previously held in the smaller Bellarmine Room.

February’s film is The Ballad of Wallis Island (100 minutes), described by The Wall Street Journal as “a fresh, big-hearted comedy.” Widely regarded as one of as one of the standout comedy-dramas of 2025, the film tells the story of an eccentric lottery winner living in isolation on a remote island, who attempts to realise his dream of reuniting his favourite folk duo for a private festival at his home.

Filmed against the striking coastal scenery of Pembrokeshire in Wales, the film stars Tom Basden (After Life, Plebs, Ghosts), Carey Mulligan (An Education, Saltburn, Maestro), and Tim Key (Inside No. 9, Alan Partridge, See How They Run).
