The special issue is available now bringing together a range of articles pertaining to topics such as the role of memory in helping people write a new story with their life, the way St Ignatius gives embodied advice in his letters for those seeking to live a spiritual life, and a variety of forms of lay Ignatian life that have enhanced our understanding of what it means to live the exercises. In the lead article, Nicholas Austin SJ tackles the problem of ‘fifth week’ and discovers an image that helps to make sense of the transition to life after a retreat. He explains how bringing together loving union with cooperative union with God can help create the poise needed to renter life as an instrument in God’s hands. Nick's article was also taken as the topic of the inaugural webinar of The Way, which aims to help writers come face to face with readers to create a culture of encounter around the journal.
The Way writers’ retreat was held at St Beuno’s retreat centre in North Wales. It was offered as part of The Way’s commitment to encouraging writing in the area of spirituality. The participants included professional writers and poets as well as amateur wordsmiths. Philip Harrison SJ and Tim McEvoy led the retreat offering spiritual accompaniment, supportive group sharing and workshops on finding a voice, experiential writing, the Ignatian Practice of writing and much more besides. Look out for details of the next The Way Webinar in the Autumn.
