Archbishop Savio Hon celebrates Chinese New Year Mass at Edinburgh Jesuit Church

January 29, 2025

This evening (Wednesday 29 January) at 5.30pm, Archbishop Savio Hon will celebrate Mass (in Cantonese) at Edinburgh Jesuit Church with the Chinese community to mark Chinese New Year. Everyone is welcome to join the Mass and the social gathering afterwards.

Archbishop Hon currently serves as the Apostolic Nuncio to Malta and Libya and Titular Archbishop of Sila. In recent weeks, he has visited several Cantonese-speaking Catholic communities across Britain, including a recent stop in Cambridge.

A Salesian and theologian, Archbishop Hon led the team that translated the Catechism of the Catholic Church, promulgated by St John Paul II, into Chinese—an enduring resource for Catholics in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, and mainland China.

The Cantonese-speaking Catholic community in Edinburgh meets for Mass on the second Sunday of each month at 2pm. More details on Mass times and church opening times can be found on the Edinburgh Jesuit Church website.

The Edinburgh Jesuit Church, formally known as the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is located on Lauriston Street, near the Grassmarket in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town. Next door to the church is the Edinburgh Jesuit Centre, which offers talks, courses, and events on spirituality, prayer, scripture, theology, and contemporary social issues.
