Thanks to the dedication of the runners and the generosity of their sponsors, this funding will support JRS UK’s frontline services such as food, accommodation, legal advice, and English classes. These services help refugees from over 40 countries at their centre in Wapping, East London, many of whom have been left destitute by the asylum system and rely on this support to survive and rebuild their lives.
Among the runners was Jesuit priest Fr Rob Rizzo SJ, who shared before the race what inspired him to take part:
“Being able to listen to the stories of refugees and what they’ve gone through, it kind of reminds me of how resilient humans are. I am running to be able to raise funds for them and that’s what’s kept me running, that’s what’s actually going to carry me across the finish line this time.”
Dunstan Rodrigues SJ, a young Jesuit in Formation who works with JRS UK and also ran the marathon, added:
“I think its very important for us as a society to care for all people, whatever their situation, and to walk with them – and JRS really does that.”
JRS UK Director, Dr David Ryall, said:
“The achievements of Team JRS UK at the London Marathon extend far beyond the finish line! Every pound raised supports frontline services such as food, accommodation, legal support and English classes that will make an enormous difference to the lives of people seeking sanctuary here. Seeing people from so many different walks of life running for our refugee friends was deeply inspiring and we're so grateful to everyone who took on this challenge."
