Two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck just 40 seconds apart, killing more than 1,500 people, injuring thousands more and causing widespread destruction.
We have already committed an initial £10,000 through Jesuit Missions to support those affected and we hope to increase that contribution through the generosity of our supporters and donors.
As rescue and recovery efforts continue, Pope Leo has called for prayer, solidarity and practical support for the people of Venezuela. Speaking after the Angelus, he expressed his closeness to all those affected and urged the international community not to forget the country as it begins the long process of rebuilding.
Jesuit Missions is working as part of the Xavier Network, which coordinates emergency responses where the Society of Jesus is present on the ground, and has activated its emergency response mechanism to ensure support reaches communities most affected by the disaster.
Our partners in Venezuela are carrying out rapid assessments to identify the most urgent humanitarian needs while providing emergency assistance, including temporary shelter, essential relief items, protection services and psychosocial support for individuals and families affected by the earthquakes. Alongside meeting immediate needs, they will continue to accompany communities as they begin the long process of recovery.
By working through trusted Jesuit partners on the ground, Jesuit Missions is helping to ensure that support is directed to those who need it most.
With your support, we hope to reach as many families affected by the earthquakes as possible and provide practical help, hope and accompaniment to communities facing immense loss.
You can support the emergency response by donating to the Jesuit Missions appeal: Emergency Appeal: help families affected by earthquakes in Venezuela - Jesuit Missions
Please continue to keep all those affected by the earthquakes, those who have lost loved ones and homes, and all those involved in rescue and relief efforts in your prayers.
