This international meeting brings Jesuits together for prayer, reflection and discernment on the life and mission of the Society today. It will begin on 11 October and is expected to last around six days.
A central task will be to examine how the Society needs to evolve to carry its mission forward, and vote on whether to convene a General Congregation, the order's highest governing body.
Jesuits in Britain will have their own voice at this gathering. The British province will hold its own Province Congregation in November 2026 to elect a representative, known as a Procurator, who will travel to Indonesia to contribute the perspective of Jesuits in Britain and the challenges we face today.
Br Stephen Power SJ, Socius of the Jesuits in Britain, said: “The main aim of this meeting will be to vote on whether a General Congregation of the Society should be called in Rome, but this also enables our provinces to engage with broader questions. Fr Sosa has invited us to ask some searching questions about how the Society needs to change to carry its mission forward. That's a conversation our province will be part of."
In his convocation letter dated 15 April, Fr Sosa highlighted themes of discernment, collaboration and networking, as key areas for discussion, building on the Universal Apostolic Preferences that continue to shape the Society’s mission worldwide.
The 2027 gathering will be the first time the Congregation of Procurators is held in Indonesia, reflecting both the global character of the Society and the growing importance of the Church in Asia.
How the Congregation of Procurators works
The Congregation of Procurators is held every four years. In preparation for the international meeting, Jesuit provinces around the world hold Province Congregations, convened and chaired by their Provincial, to reflect on the life of the province and elect their delegates.
Each province elects a Procurator, who then consults widely within his region and visits communities and apostolic works — including schools, parishes, retreat houses and social ministries — listening to the experiences of those engaged in Jesuit mission. He then brings this together in a report on the “state of the Society” in his region. These reports, submitted in advance, form the basis of the Congregation’s discussions.
On this occasion, the regions of the Society have also been invited to send a Relator, who takes part in discussions but does not vote.
Together, these contributions offer a snapshot of Jesuit life across the world, grounding the Congregation’s discernment in the lived reality of its ministries.
The most recent Congregation of Procurators took place in 2023 in Loyola, Spain, and concluded with a vote non cogenda—that a General Congregation should not be convened at that time. Further details are available on the Jesuits Global website.
